Cancer Awareness Day 2024
As cyclists, we ride for many reasons. Some ride because we are fitness enthusiasts, some are living out the dreams of our youth, while others are trying to get a quick escape from the stresses of life. Regardless of the reason for why we ride, it has become the meeting place for individuals from all walks of life.

We are a diverse club culturally, ethnically, and by age. Illnesses plague many communities and are prevalent amongst us all. To bring awareness to one of the major diseases impacting our community, Velo City Riders Cycling club will host its first Cancer Awareness Day as we highlight Breast and Prostate Cancers.
The event will be held Saturday, October 12, 2024 at the Downs Park (Brightwater Pavillion) from 8am-4pm. The day will feature events for all, including a bike ride, a 5K walk/run, along with vendor presentations and screening opportunities for both Breast and Prostate Cancers. Although the topics of discussion are not fun, we are planning to make the day a full event to bring fitness enthusiasts and our families together to learn about proper screening and prevention measures, as well as resources that are available if anyone or their family members need assistance. This event will be rain or shine, and a portion of the proceeds will go to both a local advocate for Breast Cancer individuals (Shay’s Pink Wishes) and a Prostate Cancer Organization (Emmanual Health Education).
Bike Ride / 5K Details
This event will be held Saturday October 12th at the Downs Park Brightwater Pavilion. When you get to the front gate, tell the attendant you are there for the Cancer Awareness Day event and you will not have to pay for parking.

The event starts at 9am. There will be lite refreshments during the set-up and check-ins. Event registration also includes lunch for all and supported rest stops and SAG. There will be raffles and prizes, so bring some money to participate. We can't wait for you to join us as we learn how we can be aware of the signs of cancer, prevention and support services.

There are 38 & 20 mile ride options, as well as a 5K walk / run and spectator options to choose from.

We educate, advocate, mentor, support, share resources, and grant wishes to children & young women under the age of 40 who have been affected by terminal breast cancer. With the help of family, friends, and the community, Shay Sharpe’s Pink Wishes will make the dreams of some amazing and courageous young women come true!
Emmanual Health Education
Emmanual Health Education, Inc. (EHE) is an organization that designs and delivers prostate health education to increase awareness, and prostate screening to decrease incidents and high rates of mortality. EHE facilitates quarterly support groups that foster a comfortable autonomous environment among prostate cancer survivors to share individual experiences and educational learning experiences about prostate cancer health in various community venues including but not limited to barber shops, beauty salons, community centers, faith-based organizations, and local agencies.
